Hi, all! Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated this thing. I thought I’d pop in and give you a pretty exciting update!

If you’re one of the folks who enjoyed my ITIL V3 Foundation Exam Video Mentor book/DVD set from a few years back, you’ve probably been wondering when there’d be an update. Well, I just signed a contract with my publisher, Pearson IT Certification, to create an updated version based on ITIL 2011 and the latest versions of the exams! Yee-haw! In fact, I just submitted my outline 20 minutes ago. I’m pretty excited! It’s tentatively titled ITIL 2011 Foundation Exam LiveLesson, though that may certainly change.

The format will be different, however. Instead of it being a book/DVD set like my previous work, this will be a streaming video series only, available on Safari, and on the other platforms Pearson publishes content to. There won’t be a published book. However, if you’re like me, you like to have printed stuff in front of you. You can either take a zillion screen shots (ugh, no fun), or you can grab the supplemental printed materials I’ll have available here on my website for a few bucks extra; I promise it’ll be worth every dime. I don’t want to gouge anyone.

Many companies are slashing their training budgets and are asking their employees to take computer-based training, and my video series will be an entire ITIL 2011 Foundation class online. It’s about as close as you can get to having me in your classroom.

I’m scheduled to fly to Pearson’s video studio in San Francisco (wheeee!) in April to get it all recorded, and it’ll hopefully be available by the summer. I guess I’ll need to buy a new shirt or two. :)

So, if you can hold out until the summer, you’ll have access to some really neat ITIL Foundation training via Safari featuring yours truly. I promise it’ll be worth the wait.

See you then!

All the best for 2015!

Jill

For those of you worried that it won’t comply with version 4.3 of the exam syllabus, fear not. The book is perfectly aligned with version 4.3 of the syllabus, so we’re all good there.

This is all the info I have right now, but I am very anxious and excited to get the book out to you all!

We’re in the phase of the book-writing process where the editors are working their magic. My voicovers, PowerPoints, and written book portion have been long done and submitted, and now the whole thing is going through technical editing and assembly. Exciting stuff!

Everything has been going smoothly so far, except for one small snag: my book’s description on sites like Borders.com, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc. all say the wrong thing. Gaaaah! The good news is that we know why it happened: The publisher has a standard marketing blurb that all books in the Video Mentor series automatically get as a temporary placeholder… but mine never got updated with the real book synopsis, which I submitted last July.

Understandably, I am pretty freaked out about this because the standard marketing blurb incorrectly states that my book/DVD set contains hours of Flash animations, hands on labs, and simulations; alas, my book doesn’t contain these things– they were never part of the plan. My publisher’s standard marketing language is perfect for the typical tech-training type stuff that my publisher puts out, but ITIL isn’t technical training in a “click here, configure that” sense. My product contains 100% lecture and Powerpoint, and a ton of sample questions. No labs; no Flash animations; no business simulations. It’s just me being informative and charming. :-)

We chose not to include simulations and labs because this book/DVD set was never intended to be a full-blown V3 Foundation class; it’s simply designed to reinforce the exam syllabus/requirements for students who have already either taken a class or have chosen to go the self-study route. We wanted to create something to give students some extra confidence going into the exam so they could knock it out of the park.

My (irrational) fear is that the book/DVD synopsis won’t get changed in time, and people will buy the book/DVD set expecting Flash animations and labs and simulations… and when they don’t get what they were promised, they’re going to trash the book in their reviews. Do not want.

If people aren’t happy with my product because I did a crummy job, I totally own and accept that. But if people aren’t happy with my product because of an administrative error, I am going to be REALLY unhappy because I’ll have to, you know, find a new career.

Anyhoo, my publisher found the bug and they’ve set the wheels in motion to get it fixed. Now we’re waiting for various batch jobs to complete so the information trickles down to all of the various bookseller sites.

My editorial team is a great group of folks, and I know they’re doing their best to make it right, so that’s good news.

But still… it’s like watching a pot of water and waiting for it to boil.
I’m choosing to view it as an opportunity for me to practice compassion and patience. :-)

It’s been a while since I posted anything about the progress on my book/DVD set (that’s ITIL V3 Foundation Exam Video Mentor), so here’s the latest.

The book/DVD set has a total of six chapters. I set some deadlines for myself just to keep me on track.

Chapter 1 is the ITIL introduction, which consists of three lessons. Was easy-peasy. That chapter was due on 1/15, and I delivered it on time. Yay!

Chapter 2 is the lesson on Service Strategy, and it had five short-ish lessons. Also went pretty easily. That chapter was due on 1/22, and I delivered it on time. Woot!

Chapter 3 is the enormatron lesson on Service Design, and it has nine lessons. One of those lessons is ridunkulously long, which I underestimated when I was setting my deadlines. As of right now, I’m on Lesson 7 of 9 (insert Star Trek:Voyager joke here), so I have 2.5 lessons to go. No worries; I’m going to knock it out today.

Chapter 4 is the Service Transition chapter, and it has six lessons; again, one of the lessons is super-long, but I should be able to fit it in. This chapter is due this Friday, 2/5. I have to finish it on time, because I have social stuff I want (and need for my sanity) to do that weekend; and I’m the kind of person who can’t have any fun until the work is complete. (Eat your vegetables before ice cream! Do your homework before going outside to play!)

Chapter 5 is the Service Operation chapter, which has eight lessons; two of them are wicked-long. It’s due Friday, February 12. Given how Chapter 3 went, I should probably plan to work over that weekend.

Chapter 6 is the chapter on CSI, which has five lessons, but they’re all super-fast. These were originally due Friday, February 19th, but I’m leaving for Austin on 2/16 to do some teaching and consulting, so I’m moving my deadline earlier to Monday the 15th.

The home stretch is close, and I’m really getting excited about it!

As I said in my previous post, I had some exciting news to report, but wasn’t able to say anything until the deal was sealed.

So now, the big announcement:
(Drumroll please!)

I just signed a contract to create a book/DVD set for Pearson Publishing, called ITIL V3 Foundation Exam Video Mentor (quite a mouthful!). Pearson is Penguin Books’ educational wing, and they are also affiliated with InformIT, CiscoPress, AdobePress, QUE, etc. It’s an honor to be working with Pearson and to be a part of its distinguished authors.

This book/DVD set is intended to help students pass the ITIL V3 Foundation exam, but it isn’t going to be a replacement for taking a full class or doing the requisite number of self-study hours. Instead, this product is meant to give students confidence and an extra edge before taking the exam.

Stay tuned! If you’re interested in coming along with me on my book-writing journey, just look for posts with the category tag of “ITIL V3 Foundation Exam Video Mentor.”
